Cataloging New Materials

Search initially for bibliographic records in NOTIS.

Search OCLC for possible better record if:

  1. NOTIS record is a locally created minimal-level record
  2. Significant discrepancies exist between NOTIS record and book (e.g., edition statement, publisher, pagination, etc.)

If a better record is found on OCLC, refer to section in Overlay Procedures.

If no better record is found in OCLC put the uncataloged item on appropriate monograph faculty backlog shelf.

CATALOGING PROCEDURES:

  • Do appropriate Authority work (Sets or Series, Personal and Corporate Headings).
  • If there is a conflict in the form of the heading which is not covered by a cross reference in our authority file, search LC authority file in OCLC.
  • Check non-LC Call Numbers.
  • Search in NOTIS to fit new call number into existing online shelflist. (OPAC searching sometimes produces more satisfactory results)
  • Change Status to h.
  • Change 1I to 1L, 2L, or 3L as described in NOTIS documentation.
  • Change Location Code as needed. (See section in manual, Locations.)
