  • Center for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Sciences
    • $5 million awarded by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and $5 million matched by Smith & Nephew Corporation
    • Dr. Michael Matthews, Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Larry Durstine, Department of Exercise Science, Arnold School of Public Health; and Dr. John Vena, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Arnold School of Public Health
    • Collaboration between USC, Smith & Nephew Corporation and the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas
    • Center will develop novel biologic materials and optimal rehabilitation and reconstruction techniques, guided by epidemiology and clinical research to enhance the quality of life for people with orthopaedic disorders.
       
  • Center of Economic Excellence for Strategic Environmental Approaches to Electricity Production from Coal
    • $5 million awarded by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and $5 million matched by Santee Cooper and Electric Cooperatives of SC
    • Dr. Michael Amiridis, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing
    • The goal of the center is to become international leaders in strategic environmental approaches to electricity production from coal.
       
  • SeniorSMART™Center, The South Carolina Center for Older Adult Independence: Promoting Independence for Older Adults
    • $5 million awarded by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and $5 million matched by Health Sciences South Carolina
    • Dr. Paul Eleazer, Department of Internal Medicine
    • Collaboration between physicians and researchers from USC, Clemson, MUSC, the Greenville Hospital System, Palmetto Health and HSSC
    • The center will focus on three themes: SHARP Brain, SMART Wheels and SMART Home; making it the only elderly focused center in the country engaged in all three activities.
       
  • EXPORT Center for Partnership to Eliminate Health Disparities in Cancer and HIV/AIDS
    • $7.7 million awarded for 5 years from the National Institutes of Health
    • Dr. Saundra Glover, Principal Investigator, Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities, Office of Research and Health Sciences
    • This project is divided into 4 cores areas: Administrative, Research, Research Education and Training, and Community Partnership/Outreach
    • Partnerships with Claflin University, School of Medicine, Arnold School of Public Health, College of Nursing and the Minority HIV/AIDS Council of Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun Counties
    • Researchers propose to meaningfully contribute to the reduction of health disparities in South Carolina and in the United States by developing researchers who can address the diagnoses of Cancer and HIV/AIDS in rural African American populations.
       
  • Bionanoparticle Technology Discovery and Development Laboratory
    • $800,000 awarded for 2 years from the W.M. Keck Foundation
    • Dr. Qian Wang, Principal Investigator, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Arts and Sciences
    • Partnership with The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and the USC Nanocenter
    • Researchers plan to develop new technologies in tissue engineering, sensing, drug delivery, vaccine manufacturing and other biomedical applications.
       
  • South Carolina’s Center for Clinical and Translational Research: Planning Phase
    • $156,200 awarded for 1 year from the National Institutes of Health
    • Dr. Richard Davis, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine
    • The planning phase involves 27 faculty from the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering and Information Technology.
    •  Researchers will develop a $30 Million proposal to establish a Center for Clinical and Translational Research during the planning phase.

    • $18 million proposed for 6 years from the Department of Homeland Security
    • Dr. Susan Cutter, PI, Department of Geography, College of Arts and Sciences
    • Collaborative effort consists of 70 researchers and consultants from USC College of Arts and Sciences, USC College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management, USC College of Engineering, USC Arnold School of Public Health, Savannah State University, University of New Orleans, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, University of Mississippi, University of Colorado, East Carolina University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US Army Corps of Engineers, Texas A&M, University of South Florida, University of British Columbia, MDC, Inc, Florida Atlantic University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Memphis, University of Texas, University of Maryland, US Geological Services, Institute for Building and Home Safety, North Carolina State University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and University of Southern California.
       
  • Center for Innovative Fuel Cell Design
    • $16.25 million proposed for 5 years from the National Science Foundation
    • Dr. John Van Zee, PI, Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering & Computing
    • NSF/ERC proposal consists of researchers from the University of South Carolina, Case Western Reserve University, University of Michigan, University of New Mexico, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, Texas A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, University of Massachusetts – Amherst, Southern Mississippi University, and the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
       
  • Southeastern Clinical and Translational Research Institute (SECTR)
    • $30 million proposed for 5 years from the National Institutes of Health
    • Dr. Richard Davis, Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine
    • Proposal team will organize a research infrastructure and develop novel methods, systems, and technologies at MUSC, MCG, and USC to efficiently move research along the translational spectrum from laboratory discoveries to clinical and community practice in a way that produces health benefits for our regional population
    • This proposal is a collaborative effort between faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina, University of South Carolina, and the Medical College of Georgia.
       
  • Ph.D. Education in Future Fuels at the University of South Carolina
    • $3.25 million proposed for 5 years from the National Science Foundation
    • Dr. Branko Popov, Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering & Computing
    • Objective is to establish an interdisciplinary graduate education and research program in the critical area of sustainable energy production, storage and conversion
    • Involves faculty from the College of Engineering & Computing, College of Arts & Sciences, and the USC NanoCenter
       
  • South Carolina’s Center for Cancer Research Excellence (RESUBMISSION)
    • $10.7 million proposed for 5 years from the National Institutes of Health
    • Dr. James Hebert, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Office of Research and Health Sciences
    • Researchers propose to develop a cadre of junior faculty; dedicated to broadening and deepening our understanding of the underlying causes of breast and other cancers and the large racial disparities in mortality.
    • The SC Center for Cancer Research Excellence includes 4 cores and 4 projects.
    • This Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) proposal consists of 40 researchers and consultants from the USC Arnold School of Public Health, USC College of Arts & Sciences, USC School of Medicine, Clemson University, University of Southern California, and the University of South Florida.
       
  • Mumbai Cohort Study: Cancer Epidemiology in Urban India
    • $12.,2 million proposed for 5 years from the National Institutes of Health
    • Dr. James Hebert, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Office of Research and Health Sciences
    • Researchers propose expanding the MCS to focus on hypotheses related to diet, other lifestyle-related behaviors, and potential genetic determinants of cancer in a population in the midst of a demographic, nutrition, and epidemiologic transition.
    • The proposal consists of 25 researchers and consultants from USC Arnold School of Public Health, USC College of Pharmacy, Healis-Sekhasaria Institute for Public Health in India, and Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in India.
       
  • Center for Innovative Fuel Cell Design
    • $16.25 million proposed for 5 years from the National Science Foundation
    • Dr. John Van Zee, Principal Investigator, Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering and Computing
    • Researchers propose to establish a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (NSF/ERC) focused on the fuel cell systems for the portable and transportable (i.e., small stationary) applications.
    • This NSF/ERC proposal consists of researchers from the University of South Carolina, Case Western Reserve University, University of Michigan, University of New Mexico, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, Texas A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, University of Massachusetts – Amherst, Southern Mississippi University, and the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

  • South Carolina's Breast Cancer SPORE
    • $10.3 million proposed for 5 years from the National Institutes of Health
    • Dr. James Hebert, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Office of Research and Health Sciences
    • This proposal is divided into 8 areas: Research Projects (4 projects), Research Cores (Administrative; Recruitment, Adherence, and Translation; Biometry and Data Management; Biological Specimen, Procurement, Processing and Analysis); Development Research Program, and Career Development Program.
    • South Carolina's Breast Cancer Research Consortium is committed to broadening our understanding of the underlying causes of breast cancer in order to lower incidence, improve survival, or both.
       
  • South Carolina’s Interdisciplinary Cancer Research Program Pre-Application
    • Dr. James Hebert, Cancer Prevention and Control Program, Office of Research and Health Sciences
    • The focus of this interdisciplinary effort is on common cancers that comprise the vast majority of total cancer incidence.
    • The Interdisciplinary Research Consortium will consist of 4 cores and 11 projects.
    • This effort includes investigators from 28 different disciplines and interdisciplinary fields that range from the basic and clinical sciences to information technology.
