Technical Requirements

Taking online courses through the University of South Carolina requires a computer with broadband Internet access. Familiarize yourself with the hardware and software you'll need to complete your online coursework.

Required Hardware

You must have a Windows- or Mac-based laptop or desktop computer. Tabletssmartphones and other mobile devices may work for some parts of your coursework, but will not work for others.

Operating System Requirements

Operating system requirements are as follows. You may need local administrative access to your operating system.

For PC Users

  • Minimum Operating System: Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10
  • Recommended Operating System: Windows 8.1 or 10

For Mac Users

  • Minimum/Recommended Operating System: OS X


Web Access and Browser

You must have access to a high-speed internet connection via DSL, cable, fiber optic or satellite at an FCC-recommended rate of 4 Mbps for optimal performance. Recommended web browsers are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 or 11, Microsoft Edge or Apple Safari.

Other Software and Plug Ins

Adobe Connect 8.0 and Blackboard serve as virtual hubs for online classes. Download one or both according to your class syllabus.

Additional Requirements

Individual courses may have other software requirements including basic word processing software. Check your course syllabus for specific software requirements.
