Build Your Legacy with a Deferred Gift

A legacy gift is a way for donors to create an impact that will last for generations. It is a gift made in the present but allocated for the future.

David Turybury received a Master of Science degree in physical education from the University of South Carolina in 1991. David shares why a deferred gift is the best option for his family to leave a legacy.

Q: Why was it important for you and Sheila to invest in the education of students in the College of Education?

A:  It is important to us because we are both first-generation college graduates, and we see the debt that teachers come out of college with relative to their income. If we can help alleviate that stress, they will be in a better position to have a greater impact on their students.

Q: What kind of impact did the College of Education have on you?

A: The professors were outstanding in the way they prepared me for my career. Dr. Judy Rink, a fellow SUNY Cortland alum, in particular, was and continues to be a gifted educator. The USC provided me with a Graduate Assistantship, which allowed me to concentrate on my education as opposed to how to pay for school. I am very grateful for that scholarship. As a result, we strive to pay it forward as much as we can.

Q: What type of impact do you hope to have on students through your deferred gift?

A: We hope that it will allow students who otherwise would not be able to afford the cost of school to have the chance attend college. We are examples of how that opportunity can completely change the direction of your life. These students can positively change their life and impact many others during their teaching career.

Q: Since establishing the Turybury Endowed Scholarship Fund, you have also committed to establishing an annual scholarship for the Apple Core Initiative. What made you decide to make an investment in this program as well?

A: I come from a small rural town in Western New York and know how difficult it can be to both pursue your dreams and how challenging it can be to attract qualified educators to teach in those communities. If we can help encourage some of the people who grew up in those areas to go back and reach/teach the next generation, then we are happy to do it.

Let us help you leave a legacy.

It’s easy to donate through your retirement assets:

  • Complete a beneficiary designation form provided by your retirement plan custodian.
  • Designate “University of South Carolina Educational Foundation” as the beneficiary.
  • Submit the form to your retirement plan custodian and our development office.

Benefits of donating assets to USC:

  • Your estate gift qualifies you as a member of the Carolina Guardian Society. You’ll receive communications and invitations about exclusive USC donor events.
  • Up to 70% of your retirement assets may be taxed when you leave them to your heirs. The University of South Carolina Educational Foundation can receive your gifts tax-free. Your estate will also benefit from a charitable tax deduction based on your contribution.
  • Your gift to the College of Education will support future generations of educators who will continue to make a difference in young lives.

By donating some or all of your unused retirement assets – an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan – you can secure a legacy that provides opportunities at the University of South Carolina for years to come.
