Bio

Background: I completed medical school at the University of Cincinnati, and both my family medicine residency training and sports medicine fellowship at the University of Washington. Subsequently, I spent several years as the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Currently, I am the Vice Chair for Academics and Research, and also the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director within the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville/Greenville Health System. I serve as the Senior Associate Editor for both the British Journal of Sports Medicine and Sports Health: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach. Finally, I was recently elected for a second term on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). During my career, I have worked to develop a local, national, and international reputation for teaching and scholarship. This includes award-winning scholarly activity within sports medicine (2010 AMSSM Best Overall Research Award, 2015 David T. Sisk Award for Best Review Paper) and primary care as a whole (2012 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Best Overall Research Paper). Additionally, I have been fortunate to earn several teaching awards including: the STFM Resident Teaching Award (2010), the University of Tennessee Faculty Teaching Award (2012), and the University of Tennessee (UT) Graduate School of Medicine Excellence and Leadership in Clinical Research Award (2014). My research explores several domains of sports cardiology, such as the epidemiology of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in high school and collegiate athletes, screening for SCD, and understanding the psychological impact of cardiovascular screening in young athletes. More recently, I have completed several investigations on the clinical and economic impact of physical activity based programs on cardiometabolic disease, which has included the development of a Physical Activity Vital Sign that is now embedded across our institution’s electronic medical record (Epic). My scientific contributions have been highlighted nationally, and even internationally during invited lectures to the Spanish Olympic Committee in 2012, as well as invited lectures to the 2014 and 2017 International Olympic Committee World Conference on the Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport. Additionally, as a dedicated member of AMSSM, I have provided service on the Research, Fellowship (Chair 2015-2019), Public Relations, and Annual Meeting Program Planning (2013-2017, Program Chair 2014-2015) Committees.
