University 101 – The Student in the University:
University 101 is designed to help first-year students adjust to the university, develop a better understanding of the learning process, and acquire essential academic success skills. The course provides a general orientation to the functions and resources of the university and also provides a support group for students transitioning to college by examining problems common to the first-year experience. Attaining an appropriate balance between personal freedom and social responsibility underlies all University 101 activities.
University 101 is taught in small groups (15-20 students) by faculty members and administrative personnel who have a special interest in first-year student education. Many instructors are paired with undergraduate peer leaders and/or graduate leaders. Peer leaders are outstanding junior and senior level students and most graduate leaders who participate are pursuing Masters degrees in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration program offered by the College of Education.
Each section of University 101 is as unique as the instructors who teach them. However, there are currently six required presentations for each course. University 101 collaborates with partners across campus and Columbia to present these programs:
