Lesson Title: The Key to College Life: Managing Your Life

Goals/Objectives:

Students will be able to effectively manage their stress, time, and money. They will be able to identify stress and how to relieve it. They will understand the importance of time and money management and realize the effects of procrastination.

Student Preparation:
Students will need to read pages 50-63 and the procrastination scenario in Transitions . Students should also read pages 214-227 in Been There Should’ve Done That II.

Materials/Resources:
The facilitator will need an index card for everyone in the class, including the peer leaders and themselves, and several bags of marshmallows for Marshmallow Wars. The facilitator will need the handout “100 Ways to Relieve Stress”, a sample budget handout, and a sample calendar to hand out to the class.

Outline of Lesson:

  1. Students begin class by writing a journey entry on the stress they have experienced and how they relieved it. They will also write about how they manage their time and money. (10-15 minutes)
  1. The class will participate in Marshmallow Wars and discuss ways to manage stress while reviewing the handout. (15-25 minutes)
  2. Students will fill out a chart to indicate where their time is spent throughout the day. The class will discuss charting all their important dates for the entire semester. The class will also discuss the scenario. (20 minutes)
  3. Students will complete a sample budget discuss the importance of making budgets. (20 minutes)

Assessment/Outcome:
I will check throughout the semester to see how the students are managing and organizing their life through their journal entries and e-mails. Through this session I hope the students will learn the importance of these management skills in their college experience.
