Lesson Title: Assessing Your Time Management Skills
Goals/Objectives:
- To show students how much time can be wasted in a week.
- To help the students see how much time they think they are spending on certain activities as compared to what they are actually spending.
- To give the students suggestions about how to spend their time wisely.
Student Preparation:
Prior to class students will:
- Make estimations on how much time they spend in class, studying, socializing, working, etc.
- Track a timeline of their activities for a week to bring to class.
Materials/Resources:
- Timeline Worksheet
- Time Assessment Worksheet
- Pen or Pencil
Outline of Lesson:
- The students will be asked to record how much time they think they spend doing different activities throughout the week (studying, socializing, working, etc.)
- The instructor or peer leader will collect these estimations and keep them for a week.
- The students will be given a timeline and will be asked to track their upcoming week.
- One week later the estimations will be redistributed to the students and compared to their timelines. Students can be asked to share with their results with the class.
- The peer leader can then facilitate a discussion on how to avoid wasting time during the week and can answer student questions.
- The students are then given a worksheet with questions about how they spend their time. (See attached worksheet) The results are then discussed among the class.
- Final thoughts and questions can be shared with each other to make sure that all students have a full understanding of time management.
Assessment/Outcomes:
After this lesson the students should be able to manage their time better or come to the realization that they already have good time management skills. This activity gives the students a close look at how they are spending their time. This is a good way to get the students talking because more than likely they will realize that they spend their time doing the same things. It is a good way to get the students to connect as a class.
