Training our staff is a large part of what we do in the University 101 office. We offer a variety of workshops for our Peer and Graduate Leaders, new and returning instructors, teambuilding workshops, and often provide our Teaching Experience Workshop as a pre-conference workshop for those attending the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience.
All USC faculty and staff interested in teaching University 101 are required to complete one Teaching Experience Workshop prior to becoming eligible to teach the course. These workshops are offered twice a year at the start and the conclusion of each spring semester.
Instructor Prep Workshops: Every spring semester, the University 101 department hosts a series of workshops designed to update instructors on current resources offered to their first-year students. These workshops are renewal trainings for all instructors --- first timers as well as veteran teachers. Information essential to the success of our fall courses is shared at these events, and instructors become aware of any major announcements regarding changes in curriculum and/or related initiatives.
Peer Leader Workshops: All University 101 Peer Leaders are required to complete one University 101 Peer Leader Training Workshop. These workshops are offered annually throughout the spring semester.
Graduate Leader Workshops: This one-day workshop offers the University 101 Graduate Leaders the opportunity to explore their important team-teaching role within the University 101 classroom. First-year issues are explored as well as instruction on developing a cohesive community for their students, who are new to the college environment. This workshop is required for all graduate students seeking to participate in the University 101 Graduate Leader Program.
Team Building Workshops: This workshop is an important part of the team-teaching initiative that has made University 101 such a success. Team-Building workshops are held every spring and offer instructors the opportunity to work with their teaching partners in a group setting. These workshops feature a group of facilitated scenarios that deal with first-year issues. The teaching teams then, in turn, address resources and cooperative plans of action to address each highlighted scenario.
