Description

A student’s cell phone buzzes while you are lecturing - the class snickers as the student checks it and sends a text in front of you.  In a class discussion, a student expresses racially charged language and other students become visibly upset.  Grades have been posted, and an upset student sends you an email challenging his final project and class grade.  What do you do in these situations?  How do you handle other classroom behavior situations that arise?  This seminar will provide examples of scenarios that can (and will) arise; best (and worst) ways for handling and defusing situations; and best practices for ensuring these scenarios do not occur during your teaching.

About the Facilitator

Michelle L. Hardee is the Program Manager for Graduate Student programs in the Center for Teaching Excellence. She received her Ph.D. in Marine Science from USC. Throughout her career, Michelle has been actively involved in marine science education and teacher training.  She taught throughout her graduate program and as an Adjunct Professor of Geology at the College of Charleston. She was also a postdoctoral research associate in Organic Biogeochemistry at Rutgers University.
