“Teaching is a gift. The importance and
relevance of content will be intuitively obvious to students. Teach the
class you’d like to take.” Such assumptions are mistaken and can make it
difficult to teach effectively. Join us to discuss these and other
assumptions and get on the right track for teaching excellence.

Vice Provost's Teaching Lunch: Balancing Teaching and Research in Tenure and Promotion
- Center for Teaching
Excellence (Thomas Cooper Library, Room 511). Choose one:
Effective teaching is a core value at the University of South Carolina
and is essential for tenure and promotion. New faculty need to seek and
obtain whatever assistance is needed early on to be effective teachers.
However, being an effective researcher and a productive scholar is also
essential for tenure and promotion. Balance is, therefore, required. The
Center for Teaching Excellence invites new tenure track faculty to join
us for lunch, brief presentations by Vice Provost for Faculty
Development Christine Curtis and a recently tenured faculty member, and an interactive discussion of
mechanisms faculty can use to achieve balance between effective teaching
and research.
