Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Spanish Advisement

The Department of Languages, Literature, and Cultures is committed to quality advising. Each student who declares a major in Spanish is assigned a faculty adviser who verifies that academic programs are completed in a timely manner. Advisers also discuss career options with students to assist them in making informed decisions. Although advisers are a valuable resource for information, it is the responsibility of students to keep track of their courses, and to make sure that their programs satisfy departmental and College graduation requirements.

Spanish minors should be advised by their major academic advisor. Scroll down for information about choosing courses abroad for the Spanish minor.

Spanish majors can find advisor assignments by logging in to www.my.sc.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I decide where to study abroad?

  1. Follow the checklist on the Study Abroad  website.
  2. Meet with your advisor to map out a year, semester or summer you can be away from campus.
  3. Visit Study Abroad in the Close-Hipp Building where you can research programs and financial aid.
  4. Meet with former students, read blogs online, and go to study abroad fairs.

Many study abroad locations offer a wide variety of coursework in English and Spanish to allow all types of majors to stay on track for graduation all while improving language skills and gaining cultural awareness in an immersive setting. Consider how you might fulfill Carolina Core, as well as Spanish major or minor requirements.

There are programs organized by the Education Abroad Office that include SPAN courses taught by Spanish Program faculty, as well as a faculty-led Global Classroom program. These are all well-established programs with faculty from campus whom you may already know from your classes!

It's actually very easy to get a wide variety of credit while studying abroad.

  • To be eligible for the SPAN major or minor, courses must be in the areas of LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, LINGUISTICS and CULTURE. Common courses that can count for the Spanish major or minor are listed in the chart below.
  • Students may count a maximum of 6 hours of intermediate credit toward the minor. These courses will transfer to UofSC as SPAN 002T.
  • Credit toward the major should include be at the "Advanced" level in the study abroad program's progression. These courses will transfer to UofSC as SPAN 003T, 004T, or SPAN 005T.
  • For the major or minor, the preferred language of instruction is Spanish. A maximum of ONE course taken in English treating the topics described below may be applied to the major or minor. Courses taken for General Education requirements may be taken in English.

Can I skip a language/grammar course in the sequence because I studied abroad?

Students wishing to exempt SPAN 209, 210, or 302 on-campus due to study abroad should take the Phase 2 Placement test upon return in order to get an updated placement score. Otherwise, students should enroll in the next course in the UofSC SPAN sequence, and credit from abroad should be used as a major elective, minor elective, or Carolina Core credit.
