Scholarships

We are pleased to offer our undergraduate students in a number of scholarship opportunities that are available due to the generosity of a number of benefactors.

Philo S. Bennett Medal Essay Competition

About

We invite eligible students to submit an original essay addressing the question, “what are the principles of a free government?”  Faculty members of the our undergraduate committee will judge the submitted essays.

Award/Prize

The author of the winning essay will receive a $3,000 scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.  As many as two runner-ups will receive $1,000 scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year.  Winners will choose whether to use the funds for one or both semesters.

Eligibility

Except for graduating seniors, all undergraduate political science and international studies majors are eligible. Recipients of this award may only receive it once (it is non-renewable.)

 

T. Moffatt Burris Scholarship

About

This scholarship was established to honor T. Moffatt Burriss, a decorated World War II veteran from South Carolina.  This award will be given to eligible students based on financial need and academic merit.

Award/Prize

One award in the amount of $1,000 for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Eligibility

This award will be given to political science or international studies majors based on the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Each applicant is a freshmen during the 2016-2017 year
  2. Each applicant demonstrates a financial need; and
  3. Each applicant will return as a full-time student for the 2017 fall semester. 

First priority will be given to a student from the Marlboro Academy in Bennettsville, SC.  Second priority will be given to a student form Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas.  If no student from these designated high schools is available and no freshmen has applied, the scholarship may be awarded to a sophomore or junior meeting the criteria listed above. This award may be renewable if the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA.

 

Mary Ann Fitzpatrick Scholarship in Political Science 

About

This scholarship was established in the honor of Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, inaugural dean of the combined College of Arts & Sciences.  This award will be given to eligible students based on financial need and academic merit.

Award/Prize

One award in the amount of $1,000 for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Eligibility

This award will be given to political science or international studies majors based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need.  A student should have at least a minimum GPA of 3.0 in her or his political science courses and/or as her cumulative GPA.  Recipients of this award may only receive it once (it is non-renewable.)

 

Paul William Blackstock Memorial Scholarship

About

This scholarship was established in the honor of Paul William Blackstock. This award will be given to eligible students based on financial need and academic merit.

Award/Prize

One award in the amount of $200 for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Eligibility

This award will be given to a full-time student with a major in international studies majors and will be based on academic excellent as well as demonstrated financial need.  A student should have at least a minimum GPA of 3.0 in her or his political science courses and/or as her cumulative GPA.  This award may be renewable if a recipient maintains at least a 3.0 GPA.

 

Sara Najjar-Wilson Scholarship for International Studies

About

This scholarship was established in the honor of Sara Najjar-Wilson.  This award will be given to eligible students based on financial need and academic merit. 

Award/Prize

One award in the amount of $500 for the 2018-2018 academic year.

Eligibility

This award will be given to international studies majors in the Department of Political Science based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need.  A student should have at least a minimum GPA of 3.0 in her or his major courses and/or as her/his cumulative GPA. Recipients of this award may only receive it once (it is non-renewable.)

 

Michael P. Arthur Endowment Fund 

About

This scholarship was established in the honor of Michael P. Arthur.  This award will be given to eligible students based on financial need and academic merit. 

Award/Prize

One award in the amount of $250 for the 2018-2018 academic year.

Eligibility

This award will be given to political science and international studies majors in the Department of Political Science based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need.  Recipients of this award may only receive it once (it is non-renewable.)
