After leading the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine in Columbia for nearly five years, Dean Richard Hoppmann will take on a new role as director of the school’s Ultrasound Institute and the Dorothea H. Krebs Endowed Chair of Ultrasound Education.

Hoppmann will continue to build on USC’s reputation as a world leader in ultrasound education while returning to the classroom and clinic to educate the next generation of physicians.  Dr. Caughman Taylor, chair of School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics, will serve as the interim dean effective Nov. 1.

USC hosted two international conferences under Hoppmann’s leadership dedicated to ultrasound education and technology. The most recent conference last month brought over 500 participants  from more than 20 nations and 82 medical schools to Columbia.

In a message to faculty and staff, Hoppmann said, “It has been an honor and a privilege for me to serve as your dean these past five years. What makes an institution great is the people who make up that institution and the School of Medicine is blessed with students, staff, alumni and faculty that are truly the best.”

USC Provost Michael Amaridis praised Hoppmann’s leadership of the medical school. “His love and loyal devotion to the School are immediately apparent to anyone who has worked with him. In his new role he will continue to advance the reputation of the School of Medicine and I’m looking forward to celebrating with him our international successes in the ultrasound field,” Amaridis said.

Taylor is a graduate of the USC School of Medicine (’83) who also serves as USC School of Medicine’s senior medical director for Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. As interim dean he will focus on developing more clinical integration with Palmetto Health as well as promoting the school’s educational and research activities.
