University trustees on the Buildings and Grounds Committee gave second-phase approval at a Sept. 12 meeting to completely renovate 17 bathrooms in South Tower, a residence hall built in 1965.

The $3.8 million project will include new lighting, tilework, waterproofing, piping and fixtures and remove asbestos and lead paint in affected areas.

The committee also OK'd:

• first-phase plans for remodeling a portion of the Carolina Coliseum's lowest level for basketball offices. The plans, which will affect about 35,000 square feet of space, include a shared weight room for the men's and women's basketball teams and the volleyball team.

• officially changing the name of the West Quad residence hall to Green Quad

• several deferred maintenance projects across the university system for fiscal year 2015 that will be partly paid for with matching education lottery funds. University architect Derek Gruner noted that major roofing maintenance projects on 26 Columbia campus buildings have been completed in the past five years.
