Geographers recognized at Discover UofSC

Presentations by geographers and/or geography-mentored projects do well

Discover UofSC came back in person this April for the first time since 2019, and students associated with the department shone. The annual event showcases research, scholarship, leadership and creative projects by scholars in the UofSC system.

With around 850 presentations, two geography-mentored presentations and one presentation by a geography major won first prizes. The prizes went to the following students:

  • Sophia Grimsley, a senior Environmental Science major, for her presentation, "Identifying Boundary Layer Structure from Aircraft Observations of Hurricanes" (mentored by Dr. April Hiscox, geography)
  • Abby Chapin,  a post-grad International Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies major for "The National Politics of Global Justice: Portrayals of the ICC in Kenyan Media" (mentored by Dr. Meredith DeBoom, geography)
  • Gracie Leatherman, a senior Environmental Studies and Geography double major for "Professional and Civic Engagement in Environmental Practices" (mentored by Mr. David DeWeil, Capstone Scholars Program)

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
