Fatima is working with Dr. Kulkarni on understanding the composition of dust and galaxies outside our Milky Way. They do this by looking at very bright background quasars and analyzing how, on its way to us, the quasar light gets absorbed by the dust and galaxies in front of them. This allows them to understand the chemical composition and buildup of the absorbing material which enables them to learn more about what is found in our universe beyond our own galaxy.
