For the Community

As part of our mission to promote healthy living and direct involvement in public health research among our community members, we at the Cancer Prevention and Control Program offer many opportunities for collaboration between our researchers, staff and students and community members here in South Carolina. Community members can participate in cooking classes offered by Columbia's Cooking, become involved in our well-established community-based participatory research projects or make their voices heard through our Community Advisory Group.

Community-Based Participatory Research

A major part of our mission here at the Cancer Prevention and Control Program is to involve community members and organizations directly in our research. Through our two main community-based participatory research programs, the South Carolina Cancer Disparities Community Network and DIDACTIC, we engage and collaborate with diverse communities in South Carolina to undertake health research.

Community and Partner-Engaged Research

The SC Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network is a unique project that involves collaboration of our researchers here at the Cancer Prevention and Control Program with communities and other interested partners around the state.

Farmers' Market

The Right Choice, Fresh Start Farmers' Market project began in 2011 as a way to bring local produce to a community in Orangeburg that previously lacked good options for fresh, healthy food. This project is a collaboration between the Cancer Prevention and Control Program and Family Health Centers, Inc. in Orangeburg.

Community Advisory Group

Our Community Advisory Group is made up of a rotating panel of community leaders and is responsible for advising the Cancer Prevention and Control Program on our mission and projects, especially those housed within the South Carolina Cancer Disparities Community Network-II project.
