Current Scholars

Welcome to our freshmen Scholars! Welcome back to our sophomore Scholars! We have several exciting things planned for 2007-08, and encourage you to take advantage of all possible opportunities.

Capstone Scholars Fellows
The Capstone Scholars Program wishes to recognize Capstone Scholars who actively participate in the Capstone Scholars Program and Partner Office activities. Capstone Scholars can now earn further distinction by becoming a Capstone Scholars Fellow. Students meeting the requirements will be recognized at the end of their second year. Capstone Scholars Fellows requirements and additional information can be found here.

What's Required?
All freshman Capstone Scholars are required to take a Capstone Scholars section of University 101. Through this course, they are required to attend at least 4 Capstone Conversations in the fall semester and 1 Capstone Cinema. For University 101, students must complete 10 hours of Community Service. There are several opportunities presented through the Capstone Scholars Program and our Partnering Offices to fulfill this requirement, including tutoring with Pine Grove Elementary School and University-wide Service Saturdays.

Study Abroad
The Capstone Scholars will be taking two Maymester trips again in May of 2009. One group will be going to Italy to study "Art Evaluation: Aesthetics and Art Criticism." Another group of students will travel to Peru to study the Geography of Latin America. Both trips will be led by a USC Faculty member and Staff member. More information about the Italy trip can be found here. Information for the Peru trip is available here. Other questions about the trips can be answered by the Study Abroad Office at 803-777-7557.

Interested in Undergraduate Research?
Be sure to check out the Magellan Scholars Program. The deadline for project applications is February 15, but before you can apply, you must attend an application workshop. Research mini-grants for up to $500 are also available through the Mini-Grant Program. These funds can be used to purchase materials and supplies or to off-set travel costs required for conducting the research project. For more information about the Mini-Grant Program, click here http://www.sc.edu/our/minigrants.shtml.

DISCOVER Program
The DISCOVER program is a 8-week not-for-credit seminar open to first-year students in any major. This program will help you gain some of these basic research skills and techniques (including helping you find a faculty member to work with) but you will not conduct a research project. DISCOVER meets once per week for one hour. In Fall 2008, two different sections will be offered. One will meet on Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm beginning September 16th. The second section will meet Wednesdays 4:00-5:00pm beginning September 17th. For more information, or to fill out an application, click here http://www.sc.edu/our/discover.shtml
