Summer Conducting Workshop

USC School of Music’s summer conducting workshop with tracks in orchestral, choral and wind conducting is scheduled for June 23-26, 2024.

Proposed Schedule (subject to change):

Sunday, June 23

Time and Place TBA.                   Meet and Greet

Monday-Wednesday, June 24-26, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.   

9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.                    Morning Conducting Sessions
11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.                     Lunch Break (on your own)
1:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m.                       Afternoon Conducting Sessions
4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.                      Discussion Sessions
Evening social gatherings on Monday and Tuesday

            

Registration opens January 8

Conductor: $450
     South Carolina Teachers/Conductors: $400
Deposit: $200.00 due at registration. Balance due June 3.
Conductor spots are open until filled.
Cancelation policy: Refunds will be given only if a suitable replacement is found to fill the vacant spot.


Auditor: $225 (Will participate in all sessions but receive no active podium time)
Deposit: $100 due at registration. Balance due June 3. 
Cancelation policy: Non-refundable after June 10.


Tracks

Conductors may pursue one or two of the following:
 Choral Conducting
Orchestral Conducting
Wind Conducting
                   If choosing single track the conductor will have podium sessions in that area twice per day.
                  If choosing dual tracks the conductor will have podium sessions  in each area once per day.

Choral:

Choral conductors will conduct an ensemble of singers with a  pianist.
Conductors may select from the following repertoire: 

Bach: Magnificat, movement 1
  Barenreiter

Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, mvmnt. 4
   Breitkopf and Hartel

Duruflé Requiem:  Introit and Kyrie
   Durand

Joel Thompson:  The Caged Bird Sings 
  (Excerpt)

Cecilia McDowall:  Night Flight, movement 2

 

Orchestra:

NOTE: Orchestral Track is full for conductors.  Email lsmith@mozart.sc.edu if you would like to be placed on a waiting list.  Auditing is stil open.

Orchestral conductors will conduct a sextet consisting of a string quintet and a pianist covering the woodwind and brass parts. 
Participants may select from the following repertoire:

Mozart - Divertimento in D Major, K. 136
Tchaikovsky - Serenade for Strings, Op. 48
George Walker - Lyric for Strings (Not available for purchase. Score will be provided two weeks prior to workshop.)

 

Wind:

Wind conductors will conduct a chamber wind ensemble and full concert band.
Participants  will select from the following repertoire:

Chamber Repertoire:

Mozart, Serenade in E-flat Major, KV 375 (No. 11) (Bärenreiter)
Richard Strauss, Serenade for Wind Instruments in E-flat Major, op. 7

Full Band Repertoire: 

Brahms/Buehlman, Blessed Are They
Day, Rocketship
Holst, First Suite in E-flat (Movements I & II)
Price/Williams, Adoration
Stuart, Three Ayres from Gloucester

     Note: You will be able to select the optional dual track in the cart.
