For the more than 17 percent of the population in South Carolina living in poverty, the holidays can be more stressful than spectacular. University of South Carolina students, faculty and staff can help ensure that the holidays are a happy time for all by participating in the Carolina Cares annual holiday donation drive.

Participants can brighten a child's holiday by filling a stocking with small gifts. To get a stocking and a list of stocking stuffer ideas or to get involved, visit the Carolina Cares table on the Russell House second floor next to the information desk Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m., as well as Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Stockings must be returned by Friday, Dec. 5.

Through Carolina Cares, participants already have signed holiday cards for service men and women and donated food for families' Thanksgiving meals.

The Carolina Cares drive will culminate with the 60th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 on the Historic Horseshoe. All are invited to celebrate the importance of serving others throughout the year and during the holiday season.

Carolina Cares is coordinated by the Carolina Service Council and the Leadership and Service Center
