A simple walk around campus makes it easy to see why the University of South Carolina continues to be recognized for its trees. For the sixth consecutive year the university has earned the designation as a Tree Campus USA

In the past year, UofSC has experienced some great strides and advances in the campus forest population, said Thomas Knowles, assistant director of landscaping and environmental services. The university has increased the overall net tree population despite some tree removals because of advance decay and structural integrity defects of some of the trees.

The university estimates a total of 6,800 trees with about 90 different species.

Colleges and universities named a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation have detailed plans and practices for the management of trees, emphasize the importance of an urban forest to the health of the campus community and foster student service learning activities that are centered on campus forestry.
