Dr. Peisheng Xu is a leading researcher in targeted drug delivery and nanomedicine for cancer therapy. His work focuses on developing innovative nanoparticle-based systems to deliver therapeutics directly to tumors, improving efficacy while reducing side effects. He has led multiple NIH-funded projects and holds numerous patents advancing translational cancer treatment strategies.

Research Team

  • Principal Investigator: Peishing Xu, PhD, Professor, College of Pharmacy, University of South Carolina
  • Clinical Collaborator: Julian Kim, M.D. Senior Medical Director of Oncology Services at Prisma Health–Midlands
  • Co-Investigator: Hexin Chen, PhD, Professor, McCausland College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Carolina

The Project

This project aims to develop a novel nanoparticle-based immunotherapy approach for treating triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat forms of breast cancer. TNBC disproportionately affects younger women and Black women in South Carolina and has limited effective treatment options. The study will combine two immunotherapy strategies using a specialized Nano-ERASER system designed to target and degrade key proteins that suppress the immune response. By enhancing T cell activity while minimizing systemic toxicity, this approach has the potential to improve treatment outcomes and reduce harmful side effects. Successful results could significantly advance cancer immunotherapy and provide new hope for patients with TNBC.

Why This Research Matters

Triple-negative breast cancer has limited treatment options and poor outcomes, particularly in high-risk populations. This project aims to develop a more effective and targeted therapy that improves survival while reducing treatment-related toxicity.
