Diversity Week

One of the aspects of the Carolinian Creed is to learn from the difference in people, ideas and opinions to that end, the University of South Carolina’s Student Government, in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Carolina International House at Maxcy College and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs have collaborated to observe March 25-30 as Diversity Week. The theme for the week is #allaboutusc as we recognize there are many aspects of who we are at UofSC.

Chief Diversity Officer John Dozier, Ed.D. says, “The purpose of this week is to set aside a time for the university to reflect on what diversity and inclusion mean and how each of us plays a critical role in that work. This year we will be promoting events, lectures, and socials sponsored by colleges and student organizations that engage us and compel us to learn why each of us is valuable.”

The week launches with the “Inclusion starts with ‘I’ Dive-In Social” on Monday, March 25 with the Council of Academic Diversity Officers (CADO) at the Intersection Lounge beginning at 6 p.m. Students and CADO leaders will engage in discussions regarding the diversity and inclusion efforts underway in the schools and colleges across the Columbia campus.

On March 27, “Hip Hop Wednesday” on Greene St. will feature a diversity week event called “Mii” (Making Intersectionality Intuitive). This event, co-sponsored with Student Government’s Freshman Council, will allow students of various backgrounds to visualize the intersection of all their respective identities through a button making activity. The location and timing of this event also allows a diverse group of students to stop and experience Hip-Hop Wednesday.

To round out the week, we will be supporting the following events:

March 26  Witten Lecture and Documentary Award film screening and discussion featuring the 2019 awardee Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. This event will be held in the Hollings Library Program Room at 5:30 p.m.

March 27  CREEDx is an annual event that brings students, faculty and staff together to celebrate the Carolinian Creed. This event will take place in the Russell House Ballroom beginning at noon.

March 28   African Night sponsored by the Pan-African Student Association and the Carolina International House at Maxcy College will feature free African food, traditional African cultural display, fashion show, poetry and music.

March 29 The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs will sponsor the Diversity Retreat for students. During this weekend-long retreat focused on diversity and leadership, participants will examine the meaning of social change and develop an action plan to bring back to their community.
