Undergraduate researchers: Join us for summer research workshops

The Office of the Vice President for Research is very pleased to invite undergraduate researchers to join us for a series of research workshops this summer. Topics, dates, times and locations for all workshops are listed below, and in the Research: Next Steps to Success Workshops document [pdf]. There is no registration required to attend most sessions, and all undergraduate researchers are welcome to participate.

Environmental Health and Safety Training

All three sessions offered by USC Environmental Health and Safety—Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Waste and Biosafetywill be held in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, room 106 on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24 and 25.

These sessions, unlike all other workshops below, do require registration. To choose your session and register, view the USC Environmental Health and Safety Training Schedule [pdf] and email the presenter of your desired session to let them know you will be in attendance.


 

Research: Next Steps to Success Workshops

 

Research and Ethics

Wednesday, June 1 • 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 002
Presented by Dr. Jeff Dudycha, Department of Biological Sciences

In this workshop, we will present case studies to provide a framework for discussion of common ethical questions in research. No registration required.


Preparing for Graduate School

Wednesday, June 8 • 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 002
Presented by a panel of faculty and graduate students

In this workshop, a panel of faculty and graduate students will discuss reasons to consider graduate school, how to select a graduate program and what to consider when looking for a graduate advisor. No registration required.


Funding Graduate School

Wednesday, June 15 • 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 002
Presented by a panel of faculty, staff and graduate students

This workshop will explain the options for funding your graduate education. A panel of faculty, staff and graduate students will discuss funding sources such as assistantships and fellowships and how to apply for them. No registration required.


Resumes and Cover Letters

Wednesday, June 22 • 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 002
Presented by Ashley Byrd-White, Career Development Coach, USC Career Center

This workshop will provide guidance on crafting effective resumes and cover letters in a format tailored to undergraduate student researchers. No registration required.


Applying to Graduate School

Wednesday, June 29 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 002
Presented by a panel of faculty and graduate students

This workshop will feature a discussion of the graduate school application process, with emphasis on research/personal statements and resumes. A panel of USC graduate students and faculty will discuss their experiences and answer questions. No registration required.


Effective Poster Presentations

Wednesday, July 6 • 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Jones Physical Sciences Center, room 002
Presented by Dr. Lauren Clark, Research Program Manager, Office of Research and Brittany Walter, Graduate Assistant, Office of Research

This workshop will provide an introduction to creating effective poster presentations using Powerpoint. No registration required.
