Important note: The SC Floods Conference was postponed due to inclement weather. The new date for the conference is Friday, November 18.
The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to announce a conference showcasing research funded by the 2015 SC Floods Research Initiative. This unique research initiative was launched just days after flood waters subsided in October 2015. It was designed to enable USC researchers to rapidly capture and analyze time-sensitive data from the thousand-year flood event.
The day-long conference, scheduled for Friday, November 18, 2016, is co-chaired by two of USC’s most experienced researchers in flood-related issues:
- Hanif Chaudhry, the Mr. and Mrs. Irwin B. Kahn Professor and Associate Dean for International Programs and Continuing Education in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering and Computing
- Susan Cutter, Carolina Distinguished Professor and Director of the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute, Department of Geography, College of Arts and Sciences
The conference will be held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (check in will begin at 8:30 a.m.), on Friday, November 18, 2016. It will feature scholarly oral and poster presentations from all of the 34 flood initiative research projects, covering a wide variety of subject areas from biology to economic impact to infrastructure. The event will also feature a keynote address from retired Army Colonel Kevin Shwedo, the Executive Director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and the SC Disaster Recovery Coordinator during and after the 2015 floods.
Detailed notes for SC Flood Initiative researchers and the registration form for all attendees are below. If you have any questions about the conference, please contact the Office of the Vice President for Research at vpr@mailbox.sc.edu or (803) 777-5458, for assistance.
Notes for Flood Initiative Researchers
All researchers who received funding from the 2015 SC Floods Research Initiative are required to attend the conference (exceptions will be made for those with conflicting commitments) and one investigator from each project must present their findings via a brief oral presentation, no more than 10 minutes and 10 slides in length.
Project primary investigators who cannot attend, and who do not have a project collaborator who can complete an oral presentation, will be required to submit a poster detailing their findings; posters will be on display throughout the conference.
To further showcase the findings, we will produce a small proceedings volume that will contain extended abstracts detailing findings from each research project. Researchers must submit their abstracts, using the abstract template [pdf], no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 so that we can have the proceedings available at the conference. Submit completed abstracts to vpr@mailbox.sc.edu.
SC Floods Initiative researchers are welcome to invite graduate research assistants, postdoctoral scholars and other colleagues from their research groups to join us at the conference. Please ensure that all invited colleagues complete the registration form no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016.
