Undergraduate Researchers are Invited to the “Research: Next Steps to Success” Workshop Series

The Office of the Vice President for Research is hosting a series of professional development workshops for undergraduate student researchers this summer. We invite all interested student researchers to participate in these workshops.

Topics, dates, times and locations for all workshops are listed below, and available for download in our PDF flier. There is no registration required to attend these sessions, and all undergraduate researchers from all disciplines, including UofSC students and those visiting from other institutions, are welcome to participate.

All workshops in the Research: Next Steps to Success series will be held in the Jones Physical Sciences Center, Room 104, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Research and Ethics

Presented by Dr. Jeff Dudycha, Department of Biological Sciences

Case studies will be presented to provide a framework for discussion of common ethical questions in research.


Effective Poster Presentations

Presented by Dr. Lauren Clark, Research Program Manager, Office of Research

This workshop will guide students through the process of creating effective research posters using PowerPoint.


Preparing for Graduate School

Presented by a panel of graduate students                                                                                 

In this workshop, a panel of faculty and graduate students will discuss reasons to consider graduate school, M.S. vs Ph.D. programs, and how to be a competitive candidate for graduate school. This workshop will also explain options for funding your graduate education, including assistantships and fellowships.


Resumes and Cover Letters

This workshop will provide guidance on crafting effective resumes and cover letters in a format tailored to undergraduate research students.


Reflecting on Your Research Experience

USC Connect Faculty Fellow for Integrative Learning

This interactive workshop will introduce integrative learning and engage students in reflective thinking and writing exercises about their research experiences.


Applying to Graduate School

Presented by a panel of faculty and Graduate School staff

This panel discussion will feature a discussion of the graduate school application process, with emphasis on how to select a graduate program and what to consider when looking for a graduate advisor. Common parts of application packages will be discussed, including research/personal statements, resumes and recommendation letters.
