The Office of the Vice President for Research is proud to support University of South Carolina faculty researchers at all stages of their careers. Recently, we announced the Propel Research Mentorship Program to help early-career faculty develop effective proposals for large NIH and NSF grants. We are pleased to offer an additional new program geared toward more senior faculty researchers who are interested in learning about applying for and running an interdisciplinary, federally funded research center.
The Series on Training for Advanced Research, or STAR program, will provide a series of four workshops presented by UofSC faculty members who have successfully funded and managed major federal research centers. Through these workshops, presenters will share their insights on:
- Identifying the best center grant funding mechanism for your research
- Developing an effective proposal working with co-PIs and other key multidisciplinary center partners
- Setting up a major research center for success
- Managing a research center throughout its life cycle
How to apply for STAR
Any faculty member may nominate any number of senior faculty members who meet the eligibility criteria for STAR (self-nominations are not allowed). To be considered for STAR, faculty members must:
- Hold the title of tenured associate or full professor
- Have an established research portfolio that includes at least five years of significant research funding and publications
- Be employed at UofSC Columbia, the UofSC schools of medicine in Columbia or Greenville, a four-year UofSC comprehensive institution or a UofSC Palmetto College campus.
To nominate a faculty member for STAR, the nominator will log into the Office of the VPR’s awards nomination system using the same university network username and password they use to access USCeRA, etc. (no new account required). Once logged in, the nominator will search for and select the nominee. This will generate an email that will prompt the nominee to complete the nomination package. Download the STAR Nomination Guide (pdf) for step-by-step instructions to help both the nominator and the nominee complete the nomination process.
Required Nomination Materials
The nominee will prepare and submit the following materials as PDF documents:
- Letter of intent of one to two pages in length, explaining the nominee’s qualifications to lead an interdisciplinary center grant (established research relationships, strengths and capabilities, etc.)
- Curriculum vitae
- Past five years of completed/current/pending support documentation
A faculty review committee will score nominations to inform the selection process. Selected participants will be notified via email by Friday, October 8, 2021.
