Graduate Student Data Visualization Awards

During Love Data Week (February 12-16), the University Libraries will be announcing winners of the inaugural Graduate Student Data Visualization Awards competition. During the Fall 2023 semester, we encouraged graduate students to submit data visualization projects they had created. University faculty and staff experts are judging the entries. Winners will receive monetary rewards as well as recognition of their work. The University Libraries will display the work of the winners on its website. Winners will be announced at the Data & Donuts event. See below. Additional information about the competition is located here

Data & Donuts with the Analytics Community of Practice

As part of Love Data Week 2024, all are welcome to join the USC Analytics Community of Practice in Scholar's Corner on the main floor of Thomas Cooper Library for the annual Data & Donuts data networking event! We will discuss news surrounding CarolinaAnalytics while snacking on some delicious donuts. Be sure to bring your own favorite morning beverage to go with those yummy donuts. Registration preferred but not required. Registered participants will receive event updates. At this event, University Libraries will also announce the winners of the inaugural Graduate Student Data Visualization Awards.

Data Management Plans and DMPTool

Introduction to MATLAB

MATLAB is a feature-rich programming language for scientific and numerical data processing for which USC has a university-wide site license. MATLAB also has many application toolkits available for use in diverse fields of research. This workshop will introduce users to the MATLAB programming language, with a focus on reading spreadsheet data into MATLAB, processing the data using matrix operations, writing the processed data to a spreadsheet, and visualizing the data. A MATLAB license and an installed version of MATLAB are recommended but not required to attend this workshop.

Excel for the Humanities

Provided by Villanova University’s Falvey Library, this workshop will provide tips and tricks for using Excel to help organize, analyze, and visualize data in school and work. Excel is a useful tool in ideal workplaces for humanities majors – such as publishing houses, libraries, museums, and so on. Though this workshop is geared towards those in humanities majors, all are very welcome!

Tools of the Trade: Using Excel, Tableau, and R with ggplot2 to Create Data Visualizations

A variety of software programs can be used to create data visualizations. This session explores the use of Microsoft Excel, Tableau Public, and the R programming language using the ggplot2 library to create data visualizations. We discuss benefits of each, look at their user interfaces, and show how each can use a data set to create the same visualization.

Open Science Framework is a free online research collaboration platform and data archive, and it is NOT just for science. OSF integrates with researchers’ existing workflows and, if desired, makes sharing research results easy. Virtual Love Data Keynote

Provided by the Yale Digital Humanities Lab and Cushing/Whitney Medical Library. In this virtual Love Data Week keynote event, a panel of multiple data experts will discuss their affinity for and experience with various data types, including geospatial and qualitative data. They'll talk about the rewards and challenges of working with data, sharing advice for those interested in similar work.

Introduction to Qualitative Analysis Using Taguette and QualCoder

Provided by the University Libraries at the University of Albany. No experience or programming skills required! Interested in free tools for coding and analyzing qualitative data? Join us for a demo of using Taguette, a free and user-friendly tool that can also be used in a browser. We'll then explore QualCoder, another free tool that has more robust features compared to Taguette.
