The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment (SEOE) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Organic Geochemistry or Biogeochemistry beginning August 16, 2024. We seek an outstanding individual who uses innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to examine the ways in which geochemical and biogeochemical processes mediate chemical exchange between the hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of South Carolina (USC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment (SEOE). The SEOE is a center for innovative, integrative, and inclusive research and education across a broad spectrum of natural and social sciences. The SEOE consists of approximately 35 full-time faculty members and 10 staff members who support programs in Environment and Sustainability (Environmental Science and Environmental Studies), Geology and Geophysics, and Marine Science. The SEOE enrolls some 600 undergraduate majors in four bachelor’s degree programs and 60 graduate students pursuing MS, Masters of Earth and Environmental Resources Management (MEERM), and Ph.D. degrees, as well as regularly hosting postdoctoral and visiting researchers and scholars.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to one or more of these programs through research and teaching and to provide overall leadership facilitating cooperation and coordination across disciplines. We seek a nationally recognized researcher, an experienced teacher, and a proven leader who is excited to guide the SEOE through its next phase of growth.

The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant natural or social science field, years of experience consistent with academic policy for faculty rank and be tenurable in the SEOE, preferably at the rank of Full Professor.
Start date: July 1, 2024.

Professional Track Faculty Member and Director of the Masters of Earth and Environmental Resources Management (MEERM)
The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment (SEOE) at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a Professional Track Faculty Member and Director of the Masters of Earth and Environmental Resources Management (MEERM) professional master’s degree program. We seek an energetic, innovative individual committed to providing high-quality educational experiences to aspiring leaders in environmental management and sustainability in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to lead the next phase of development of the MEERM program with the goal of building a leading professional masters degree in environmental management. Responsibilities of the position include identifying, developing, and maintaining internship and cooperative opportunities for SEOE students; leading marketing and recruitment efforts for the MEERM program; and leading improvement of the curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of students and employers. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the MEERM program’s internship course and teaching additional courses in the candidate’s area of expertise across the SEOE’s curriculum. This full-time, professional track faculty position is on a 9-month pay basis with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2024.

Open Position within the College of Arts & Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences to begin August 16, 2024. This is either a tenured faculty or professional faculty position that will guide and lead the Baruch Institute into its next phase. The Baruch Institute conducts research and supports education to improve the management of marine and coastal resources and advances basic science for the well-being of people and their environment. It was established in 1969 through the joint efforts of the University of South Carolina and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation. It consists of field laboratory facilities located on Hobcaw Barony, near Georgetown, SC and facilities on the university’s main campus in Columbia, SC.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the successful candidate for the Director position will bring administrative experience in managing an interdisciplinary research program, and an understanding of the unique requirements and opportunities that a marine field station brings. We seek an individual with demonstrated ability with fundraising or program development. For a tenure track faculty position, the individual must also have an internationally recognized and vibrant externally-funded research program.  The Baruch Institute Director will also have the opportunity to recruit additional tenure track faculty that will leverage the unique resources of the Institute for their research and educational programs.

The appointment will be at the rank of Full Professor, tenurable in a school/department within the College of Arts and Sciences or as a professional track faculty within a school/department within the College of Arts & Sciences.
