Paul Reed (2016, PhD) has accepted a tenure-track position in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Alabama.

Paul Reed (2016, PhD) has accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of phonology/speech science in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Alabama. He will have dedicated lab space to pursue his research on the sociophonetics of Southern and Appalachian speech as well as the intersection of social factors with speech and communication science. His teaching will include courses in phonology and speech science as well as quantitative teaching research methods. His position begins August 2017.

Paul studied sociolinguistics in our Linguistics Program and wrote a dissertation titled "Sounding Appalachian: /aI/ Monophthongization, Rising Pitch Accents, and Rootedness" under the direction of Tracey Weldon. His committee members included Elaine Chun, Allen Montgomery, Michael Montgomery, and Erik Thomas. In addition to receiving many accolades during his time in our program and serving as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at USC, Paul will be co-teaching a course at the Linguistic Institute this summer called "Intonation and Social Identity."
