In search of a new nickname [opinion]
In a fit of political correctness, in 2005 the NCAA sanctioned Newberry College and 16 other colleges and universities with Native American nicknames, declaring these nicknames “hostile and abusive.” Those who refused to comply with the dictate of the NCAA and change their nicknames would lose the opportunity to host NCAA playoffs. When participating in playoffs at other venues, they would be forced to cover up any offending imagery, logos or language. Even the word “Indian” was deemed offensive.
