University announces commencement schedule

The University of South Carolina will hold commencement exercises for its Columbia campus May 8 – 9.

Three ceremonies will be held for bachelor’s and master’s graduates to accommodate the increasing number of students and their families who are attending the ceremonies.

Brian Lamb, the founder of C-SPAN (the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network) and the CEO of the network since its establishment in 1979, will address graduates of the first undergraduate ceremony, set for 3 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Colonial Life Arena.

He will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree at the ceremony, during which graduates of the Moore School of Business, the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, the College of Nursing, the S.C. College of Pharmacy and the Arnold School of Public Health will receive degrees.

G. Wayne Clough, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and a past president of the Georgia Institute of Technology, will address the 9:30 a.m. Saturday ceremony in the Colonial Life Arena. Clough will receive an honorary doctor of engineering degree at the morning ceremony for graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors College.

Donald L. Fowler, chairman of Fowler Communications Inc. in Columbia, and a former national chair of the Democratic National Committee, will speak at the 3:30 p.m. ceremony for graduates of the College of Education; the College of Engineering and Computing; the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management; the Fort Jackson Military Base Program; Interdisciplinary Programs; Palmetto Programs; the School of Music; and the College of Social Work. Fowler will be awarded an honorary doctor of public service degree.
