Carolina Spotlight: Jim Twitty

Jim Twitty started working for Carolina as a student assistant in 1978. Despite leaving the university to work for the City of Columbia for a few years, Twitty has stayed in USC’s Continuing Education and Conferences office since that first on-campus job. Twitty, conference and event services manager, says he couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

What he does:

“I’m a conference manager. I basically manage the conference and event services area. Last year was a banner year. We had 30-plus events to manage.”

What his office does:

“A lot of people don’t realize that we are here. We provide a service for not only university departments but for state agencies and nonprofits. People hire us when they need a helping hand to put on a conference. They can turn over the registration and the logistics and we can pull it together. Our department is varied so we also do professional development, pre-university programs and test prep programs.” (Check out more here. Faculty and staff members get a discount on classes.)

What he likes about it:

“After I left to work at the city, I came back to USC as director of continuing education. I decided I didn’t really enjoy managing people. I really enjoy managing projects, which is exactly what I do now. I know exactly what I need to do when I come into work each day. It’s one of the most fun things that I can do. I talk to so many people and deal with so many people at the university from students, staff members and upper administration because we serve so many people through our conferences. I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.”

His favorite events:

“We manage logistics for First-Year Reading Experience. That can be rather interesting, trying to physically seat more than 5,000 students to meet to discuss the book. It’s one of our more challenging events, but we really enjoy doing it. It’s like putting a puzzle together. I used to do murder mysteries and I took the program to the city as well. I used to manage the holiday parade and the Irmo Okra Strut. My favorite event probably was Mayfest. I love doing special events because they come to an end and you can see what you produced.”

Why Carolina?:

“I grew up in the area. Graduated high school, came to Carolina, started working as a student. I never thought I would be working in education. That wasn’t my plan, not that I had a plan. It just started and it led to different positions and dealing with a lot of great people over the years. Carolina is pretty much my family.”
