Green Quad to launch ‘Greening the Mind’ series

The University of South Carolina Green Quad Learning Center will launch a new lecture series “Greening the Mind,” which will explore a variety of green perspectives on the world.

Intended for the public and the campus community, the series will feature university English professor Dr. Laura Walls as the first speaker Wednesday, Feb. 3. She will read from, and discuss her new book, “The Passage of Cosmos: Alexander von Humboldt and the Shaping of America,” at 7 p.m. in the center, located in the Green (West) Quad complex south of Wheat Street between Main and Sumter streets. The series is free.

Walls’ book bridges the world of science and the humanities and details Von Humboldt, a pioneer environmentalist whose sympathies crossed nations, races and cultures; his friendships included Thomas Jefferson, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Simon Boliver, Moses Mendelssohn and John C. Fremont.
