USC College of Arts and Sciences administrator named
president of the SC Association of Alumni Directors

Ann Cameron, director of external relations for the University of South Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences, has been named president of the South Carolina Association of Alumni Directors (SCAAD).

Cameron will serve a two-year term that began June 1. Cameron, who joined the university in 1983, oversees the College of Arts and Sciences’ alumni program, which has more than 60,000 alumni. SCAAD membership comprises alumni directors for all institutions of higher education in South Carolina.

Arnold School researcher Durstine
Becomes USC’s third Citation Award recipient

Dr. Larry Durstine, of the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health, has been recognized with the prestigious Citation Award of the American College of Sports Medicine.

The Citation Award recognizes “significant and important contributions to sports medicine and/or the exercise sciences. These contributions may include, but are not limited to, research and scholarship; clinical care; and/or administrative or educational services in sports medicine or exercise science.”

Durstine is the chairman of the Arnold School’s department of exercise science and past president of the ACSM. He is internationally recognized for his research on lipids and lipoproteins; physical activity, physical fitness, and health; cardiac rehabilitation; and exercise management for chronic diseases and disabilities. His studies have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Heart Association and private foundations. Among his many honors and awards, Durstine received USC’s Michael J. Mungo Distinguished Professor Award and the Governor’s Distinguished Professor Award, both in 2005.

Two other USC exercise scientists are past recipients of Citation Awards: Dr. Russ Pate in 1996 and Dr. Steve Blair in 1994. Like Durstine, Pate and Blair also are past presidents of ACSM.
