Tour of duty: Pastides visiting military installations
University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides is on a mission.
Pastides is participating in the JCOC (Joint Civilian Orientation Conference) Sept. 11-16 with some of the nation’s top civilian leaders.
Hosted by the U.S. Department of Defense, the trip includes visits to U.S. military installations, the locations of which cannot be disclosed prior to the trip. Pastides is traveling with leaders from government, business and industry and is visiting U.S. Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force and Coast Guard installations. The trip will conclude with high-level briefings at the Pentagon on Sept 16.
Pastides is sending daily updates to his blog: http://web.sc.edu/wpmu/president/.
The event is the U.S. Department of Defense’s oldest outreach program and the only one sponsored by the U.S. secretary of defense. It was established by Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal in 1948 as a course for top-flight civilian leaders to present an integrated picture of the military establishment and deal with national policy, the problems confronting the United States in pursuing its policies, and the economic, political and military means to carry out that policy.
Today, JCOC is coordinated through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.
The mission of the JCOC is to increase public understanding of national defense through first-hand observation of the military services, with the specific objectives to the following:
- Acquaint participants with the strength and readiness of the U.S. Armed Forces through personal observation of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard activities.
- Facilitate the candid exchange of information on defense matters among senior civilian and military defense officials and JCOC participants.
- Provide the American public opportunities to obtain a better understanding of national defense policies and programs from opinion leaders who will share the firsthand observations and knowledge they gained during the conference.
