ĎAce of Cakesí Duff Goldman coming to campus Sept. 2

America’s best-known cake master, Duff Goldman, is coming to the University of South Carolina Wednesday, Sept. 2, to address students, attend an undergraduate culinary class and judge – What else? – a cake-decorating contest.

The owner of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, Md., Goldman is host of Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” a show as popular for his personality and style as it is for his masterful cake creations. His visit to the university is sponsored by Carolina Productions; the hotel, restaurant and tourism management program and McCutchen House.

Goldman will address students, faculty and staff at 8 p.m. in the Russell House University Union Ballroom. The event is free, but university ID is required. A capacity crowd is expected, so early arrival is encouraged.

Leading up to the evening talk will be the cake contest, featuring 20 student teams and held in the lobby of Russell House University Union from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. McCutchen House Chef Kelly Wilson will oversee the contest, which Goldman will judge.

Students must register their team by Friday, Aug. 28. To register, contact Becky Moody at 803-777-8225.

While on campus, Goldman also will attend a food-production class at McCutchen House and answer questions from more than 80 students in the hotel, restaurant and tourism management program.

Goldman, known for his trademark baseball cap and goatee, uses blowtorches, chain saws and other power tools to create masterpieces with his staff, all artists and fellow rock musicians. He is one of the most sought-after cake masters in the country, with his creations ranging from $6 to $20,000 a slice.

His creativity, which he says was nurtured by spraying graffiti on trains in his youth, also is evident in his art as a sculptor and as a musician; he plays bass in an indie instrumental band.

Goldman grew up in McLean, Va., and Cape Cod and earned degrees from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, Calif.
