University unveils initiative to protect digital assets

USC is currently working to ensure the safety of digital records and information. The Secure Carolina initiative is a comprehensive series of projects focused on improving the state of information security and privacy at the university. The Division of Information Technology answers some basic questions about the project.

What is Secure Carolina?

The Secure Carolina initiative will establish a comprehensive, top-down security framework that will integrate security and privacy measures throughout all information technology environments of the University of South Carolina system. New measures will provide greater security and privacy education and training, and create an accountability structure for ongoing monitoring, and advisement of current security and privacy issues. This initiative will include the review and implementation of industry standards and guidelines where applicable to university information security policy, practices and technologies.  

Will Secure Carolina change how I do work or research as a university student or employee?

Yes. As the university information security and privacy policy standards and procedures are reviewed, they will be updated and integrated into departmental processes, projects, systems and staffing. 

Will Secure Carolina guarantee that the university will not be hacked and data will not be compromised?

Unfortunately, no security system can guarantee 100 percent protection. The university takes data security seriously and the Secure Carolina project is working to greatly improve security and privacy measures systemwide.

Why is Secure Carolina important?

The project will reduce the risk of exposure of the sensitive data of university affiliates, including faculty, staff, students, patients, donors and others. It will reduce the financial and reputational risk to the university from sensitive data breaches and reduce the risk of system compromises that potentially 1) interfere with the work of faculty, staff and students, 2) allow sensitive data exposure, and 3) facilitate unauthorized activity.
