‘Southern Exposure Series’ to present Exposed Wiring IV

The University of South Carolina’s “Southern Exposure New Music Series” and Experimental Music Studio (xMuse) will present the fourth installment of “Exposed Wiring,” featuring Odd Appetite and Susan Fancher, Saturday, Feb. 27.

The 7:30 p.m. concert at the School of Music recital hall is free and open to the public.

Odd Appetite’s creative repertoire includes the use of musically interactive computer software, spatial speaker configurations, amplified triangles, microtonal bells, drums, tuned aluminum pipes and a de-tuned and amplified cello with stomp boxes and electronic effects. Members also will perform Radiohead’s “Like Spinning Plates” in an arrangement that uses electronic loopers, wine glasses and whirly tubes. The concert also features Lois V. Vierk’s “Go Guitars” for five electric guitars, influenced by traditional Japanese court music, and School of Music faculty member Reginald Bain’s “Jovian Images,” inspired by NASA photographs of planets and performed by renowned saxophone virtuoso Susan Fancher.

Based in New York City, Odd Appetite comprises performers/composers Ha-Yang Kim, a cellist, and Nathan Davis, a percussionist. Classically trained in American and European conservatories, Odd Appetite composes and performs its own music, written for this unique instrumentation, and performs commissioned works by select composers.

Fancher is one of the pioneer saxophonists of her generation and has commissioned many compositions for saxophone and saxophone quartets. She has recorded more than 10 CDs and is a regularly featured columnist for the nationally distributed Saxophone Journal.

The “Southern Exposure New Music Series,” under the direction of John Fitz Rogers, regularly performs a variety of recent music, as well as classic compositions from the past century. Students at USC profit from frequent visits and residencies associated with this concert series.
