Six in HESA Program land overseas internships

Six graduate students in the University of South Carolina’s Higher Education and Student Affairs Program are participating in overseas internships this summer.

They are Brent McCauley of St. Joseph, Mo; Lucy Fort of Crawfordville, Fla.; Allison Conway of Mequon, Wis.; Susan Hochreiter of Gettysburg, Pa.; Gaby Martinez of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; and Carter Cox of Louisville, Ky.

Hochreiter is at International University, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, working with their staff on members orientation program for incoming students and pre-orientation for students preparing to study in the United States.

“I hope to better understand the experiences of American students studying abroad in Vietnam,” she said. “I will gain greater perspective on the study-abroad process in general and on Southeast Asia in particular. I hope to apply this experience to a future career in student affairs and higher education administration.”

The internship relates to her interest in study abroad and to her current graduate assistantship in USC’s Study Abroad Office. She is also interested in the study of comparative and international education.

Fort and Conway are interning in the international and marketing departments at Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland. The two are studying how the Irish university system works and assisting students studying overseas.

McCauley is interning at the Institute for Tourism Studies in Macao.

Martinez is at Ming Chuan University in Taipei.

Cox is at the University of Dundee in Scotland.

The HESA Program at the University of South Carolina is part of the department of educational leadership and policies in the College of Education. The program offers a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs and a doctorate in educational administration with an emphasis in higher education.
