Dear Carolina Community, Due to anticipated inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Ian, all classes scheduled for the Columbia campus for Friday, Sept. 30 are canceled, including all in-person and virtual classes. As a state agency, the university follows the delay and closing determinations of Richland County government. Friday’s closure will not impact classes, games or other activities scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 29. Essential campus operations like food service, housing, health services and virtual academic support services will continue throughout the closure. Essential employees are required to report to campus. Employees should check with their supervisors for additional details. The university is dedicating all available resources to the safety and welfare of our campus community, and over the past several days, we have been in constant communication with city, county and state officials and putting appropriate plans into place. Please exercise caution if you must travel during the storm, which is expected to be downgraded once it impacts the Columbia area. Currently, the storm is currently projected to bring 3-5 inches of rain and strong winds to the Midlands. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move to higher ground. Monitor Carolina Alert for flash flood warnings that may impact campus. Areas that are especially prone to flooding include: • Intersection of Main and Whaley streets • Parking lots behind 300 Main St. • Parking lots behind the Blatt P.E. Center • Sumter Street under the railroad bridge • Pickens Street under the pedestrian crossing • Five Points The safety of our campus community is a primary concern of the university, so please be sure to monitor sc.edu/weather, social media and Carolina Alert for updates.

The University of South Carolina is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning. The National Weather Service in Columbia has issued an excessive heat warning for the Columbia campus until Thursday, July 7, 2022 7:00pm. UPDATE to Crime Alert: After a thorough canvas, the suspects are not believed to be in the area. This incident is being investigated by the USC Police Department and Columbia Police Department. Members of the Carolina Community with information are encouraged to contact the USC Police Department at 777-4215. Safety Tips: USC offers the free RAVE Guardian Safety App which turns any cell phone into a personalized protection network, connecting with University Police during an emergency and giving them important information they need instantly. The University has and encourages the use of several available shuttle services for transportation to and around campus such as the Evening Shuttle, Late Night Shuttle, APO, and others. Have a plan before going out. Make sure your friends know not to leave you alone or let you leave anywhere with someone other than the friends you came with. Stay in a group as much as possible. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If a place or situation doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Check https://sc.edu/carolinaalert for information.

CRIME ALERT An armed robbery occurred around Russell House and Senate Plaza. Three males wearing ski masks. Suspect Description: 3 males wearing ski masks 1. Wearing all black with ski mask 2. Type of Bulletin: Assisting Other Agency (Fatal Shooting Investigation) – Columbia Police Department Location of Incident: 810 Pulaski Street – Greene Crossing Apartments Incident Date and Time: Sunday, March 13, 2022 at approximately 1:45 a.m. Alert Status: Bulletin with social media notification, email and web page posting. Incident: At approximately 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 13th at least five people were shot inside an apartment complex at the corner of Greene Street and Pulaski Street by several unidentified shooters. One person was killed and four others sustained non-life threatening injuries. None of the victims are affiliated with UofSC. If the situation has not reached a critical stage, you may opt to call the USCPD non-emergency number (803-777-4215), send a message via the Rave Guardian Safety App, or use a referral system such as the university’s Student Care and Outreach Team. Always pay attention to your surroundings. If something doesn’t seem right, act on your intuition and leave the area, if possible. Use your best judgement to avoid the threat by determining whether it would be safer to evacuate or remain inside. If the threat is imminent or the attack has already begun, do not hesitate. Call 911 as you proceed to the safest location based on your assessment of what’s happening around you. The more distance and barriers you can place between you and the threat, the better. UofSC Columbia campus to close Friday, Jan. 21 Due to expected inclement weather, including possible ice accumulation on roadways, the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus will be closed on Friday, Jan. 21. This includes all university offices. All in-person classes scheduled on Friday will be canceled and remote classes may be rescheduled. As a state agency, the university follows the delay and closing determinations of Richland County government. Please exercise caution when traveling Friday and early Saturday, as road conditions may be hazardous. Note: Essential campus operations like food service, housing and health services will continue. Essential employees are required to report to campus and employees who telecommute should continue to work remotely during the closure. Please check with your supervisor for additional details.
