Study

African American Studies classes allow you to build a course of study with abundant opportunities for learning and service in many fields. Our faculty examine and teach about the Black experience from diverse perspectives, and they will guide you as you learn to do the same.

African American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the history, culture, beliefs and actions of people of African descent in the United States and across the world. In African American Studies you will:

  • Apply awareness and empathy to solve challenging problems.
  • Develop oral and written communication skills through multiple platforms and technologies.
  • Explore the multi-dimensional experiences of people of color in local and global contexts.
  • Gain experience in humanities and social science research methods, textual analysis and service-learning opportunities.
  • Learn how to apply both critical and creative thinking with confidence.
  • Take courses across diverse departments based on your interests and goals.
  • Work with an engaged, award-winning faculty who will guide you through each stage of the academic process.

Major in African American Studies

You will develop an understanding of race and the African American experience and develop service-learning experience by applying your knowledge in local civic organizations, public agencies, churches and research institutes. As an AFAM Studies major, you will learn social, historical and cultural foundations and study in discipline-based courses.

Minor in African American Studies

A minor in African American Studies strengthens your undergraduate degree by providing interdisciplinary tools and resources to evaluate historical, cultural, social, economic and political developments in South Carolina, the South and beyond. In addition to two core courses, students will select related courses in other disciplines (as approved by the program director and faculty advisors).

For details, view our major and minor in the Academic Bulletin, or read our course offerings for the current semester.
