Community Outreach Initiatives
The SEOE believes that science and scientists should not remain confined to closed lab doors. So our department is always looking forward to help the community in different possible ways. One of the most exciting ways to do this, we believe, is through communicating the science that we do through demonstrations, presentations, fun experiments and exhibitions, thereby cultivating the understanding of and the enthusiasm for Earth Sciences amongst everyone, especially young school students. Our outreach activities are usually led by graduate students within the department. Natural History Resources
Knowledge and understanding of the natural world is an essential element of the broader understanding of earth, ocean, and environmental systems. Exposure to natural history is an essential element of our curriculum. Our undergraduate degrees include field trips and experiences that immerse students in the field, be it for geological sciences, marine sciences, or environmental sciences and studies. This experience of the natural world brings reality to classroom learning.
Field courses take advantage of resources in South Carolina and beyond. Congaree National Park is a unique example of old-growth floodplain forest, and the nearby site of our field course in environmental sciences and studies. The coastal and marshland habitats at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory near Georgetown, S.C. is the setting for our field course in marine sciences. Our geological sciences field course takes place in the western U.S., with its many opportunities to see broad expanses of geologic formations.
