60th ASH Annual Meeting & Exposition
Zanshé Thompson was selected to give an oral presentation at the 60th ASH Annual Meeting
& Exposition in San Diego, CA. She presented her work on "Ing4 Regulates Hematopoiesis

Congratulations to BME senior Ande (Lauren) Hesser for winning the South Carolina
Society of Professional Engineers Award! Ande has been accepted into the PhD program
at the University of Chicago. Best of luck with your future studies!
Outstanding Senior Award
BME is proud to honor its top graduate Eric Bidinger with the Outstanding Senior Award.
Eric is headed to MUSC in Charleston, and is planning on becoming either an orthopedic
surgeon or an emergency room physician.
Congratulations to Gamecock BME students Erica Maissey and Tibra Wheeler for being
awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship this year! Honorable mentions went to
USC BME'lers Shrusti Patel and Chris Haycook.
Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award
BME faculty Dr. Chandrashekhar Patel has won the USC School of Medicine 2018 Dean’s
Distinguished Service Awards for Diversity and Inclusion Leadership.
Congratulations to Dr. Sue Lessner for being elected a fellow of the American Heart
Association (AHA) at the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology conference
Congratulations, Merina Jahan!
Graduate student Merina Jahan has been awarded the very competitive GHC Scholarship
to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) for Women in Computing conference in
Orlando, Florida in October 2017. This is world’s largest gathering of women technologists
and is produced by the Anita Borg Institute in partnership with ACM.
Samuel Litman Distinguished Professor Award
Congratulations to Dr. Tarek Shazly for winning this year's Samuel Litman Award, recognizing
distinguished educational performance and accomplishments within the College of Engineering

Congratulations to senior Ryan Geiser for winning the South Carolina Society of Professional
Engineers Award! Ryan has accepted a PhD position at Cambridge University, UK, funded
by the prestigious Whitaker fellowship.

Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award
Congratulations to BMEN senior James Frederick "Weber" Pike for being awarded one
of USC's highest honors! The Sullivan Awards are given each year for outstanding achievements,
campus leadership, exemplary character and service to the community.
Congratulations to Dillon Brown for winning this year's BMEN Outstanding Senior Award!
Dillon plans to attend the graduate Biomedical Engineering Program at the Georgia
Institute of Technology.
South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers (SCSPE) Award
Congratulations to BMEN senior Juline Deppen who was awarded this year's SCSPE Award.
Juline will be starting her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute
of Technology in the fall.
USC Outstanding Senior Award
BMEN senior Elizabeth Moore has been awarded USC's Outstanding Senior award. After
graduating she plans to attend the MD/PhD program at Vanderbilt University.
In addition to winning second place in this year's annual IBE meeting in Greenville,
SC, with his research about the “Effect of Key Polyphenol Functional Groups on Oligomer
Formation in Alzheimer’s Disease”, Ryan Geiser has also won first place for all poster
presentations in Natural Sciences at the prestigious Stanford Research Conference,
as well as second place for the afternoon poster presentations in Biomedical Sciences
at USC's Discovery Day. Way to go!
BME senior wins prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
BME senior Elizabeth Crummy was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. She
plans to attend graduate school at the University of Washington, where she will study
Neuroscience. We wish you all the best for the future!
