By Ashley Canady Slane, Carolina on King, ashley.slane@sc.edu, 843-958-2734

Patricia Moore-Pastides, first lady of the University of South Carolina and author of “Greek Revival: Cooking for Life,” will be Carolina on King’s special guest for “2nd Sunday on King” Nov. 11. She will speak with guests, offer samples from her recipes and sign books from 1-3 p.m.

Book sales benefit the USC Health and Sustainability Fund.

Moore-Pastides holds a master of public health degree from Yale University and espouses the benefits of the Mediterranean lifestyle in her book, supported by summaries of current scientific research. Throughout the book she shares lively stories of her days living in Greece and Cyprus that exemplify the enduring charm of an Old World lifestyle. Always mindful of time, health and budget, she makes wonderful use of natural, minimally processed ingredients readily found in most neighborhood supermarkets, with 87 recipes designed for the needs and appetites of everyday cooks.

“Greek Revival: Cooking for Life” showcases a pantheon of healthy recipes, accompanied by beautiful color illustrations, helpful preparation techniques and tips for making the most of familiar ingredients, from colorful fresh fruits and vegetables to whole grains, beans and seafood. These natural flavors are enhanced by rich extra-virgin olive oil, so the delectable dishes are savored without guilt.

Health-conscious readers looking to improve their diets and protect themselves from the perils of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's disease will find hope in the author's research, presented in a way that is accessible and inspiring.

“We all have to eat and if we can work on eating more healthfully, we'll live more healthful lives and more quality lives," says Moore-Pastides.  "I realized how important it is to our state to get this health information out and for people to be able to make positive changes."
