Lab Theater explains dating for the 21st century in ‘UP 2 D8’

The University of South Carolina Lab Theater will produce “Up 2 D8,” a new play about dating in today’s society as told through the eyes of women. USC is the first university and one of the country’s first venues to produce the play.

The play will run Oct. 28-31 at 8 p.m. at the Lab Theater. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.

In a series of monologues, 11 diverse women grapple with the meaning of dating and romance in the 21st century, from the promise and pitfalls of Internet dating, to biological clocks, dating as a widow and the self-help industry. The monologue form emphasizes isolation in the modern world, but the women's various independent struggles ultimately coalesce in a scene of unity and hope.

The cast features nine undergraduate theater majors, one graduate business student and one British exchange student.

Director Park Bucker describes the play as “a series of comic monologues delivered by a cross section of single women struggling with the modern challenges of dating in an online world. The play's final scene unites the monologuists as part of a TV talk show audience in which they discover the necessity -- and joy -- of personal interaction and communion.”
