Hedy Zaragoza joins USC School of Medicine as general counsel
Hedy Zaragoza has been named the general counsel and director of legal services for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Educational Trust and University Specialty Clinics.
With more than 16 years of legal expertise in the health care industry, Zaragoza will lead the School of Medicine’s efforts in legal affairs and compliance. She will be responsible for the clinical practice's various internal legal issues, management of lawsuits and claims, and compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations.
Zaragoza was the director of liability management for Lexington Medical Center and also worked as the risk manager for Palmetto Health Richland for several years.
Zaragoza earned her law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1993. She also has a master’s of science in cardiovascular nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Far Eastern University in Manila, Philippines.
Zaragoza has worked as a clinical nurse in critical care, coronary care and open heart surgery in large academic and trauma centers including Duke University Medical Center, Washington Hospital Center and New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Zaragoza also held administrative and leadership positions, including serving as the program nurse consultant for legal and disciplinary affairs for the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
