When student body President Joe Wright developed a list of initiatives for the year, one of his goals was to provide iPads for students, faculty and staff. Given current technology and the future of technology trends, Wright recognized a need for students to be familiar with these devices.
"It is important that we begin to integrate technology in all parts of education,” Wright said. “Students should have the opportunity to expose themselves to all styles of learning, especially when it comes to learning through technology. The iPads will be a bold move that will make more information available, help students navigate through digital textbooks and encourage students to be more innovative."
USC Student Government has partnered with Thomas Cooper Library to make available 20 iPads for checkout from the library’s Technology Lounge. The iPads will come loaded with a wide range of applications for work and play. Think Blackboard Mobile and Angry Birds.
During the loan period, users can download additional applications. Students can check out iPads for three days and faculty and staff can do so for five days. The iPads can be renewed once per loan period.
Wright worked with Marna Hostetler, director of Thomas Cooper Library, to spearhead the project. William Hogue, chief information officer and vice president of Information Technology, is responsible for the funding of this project.
“Without Dr. Hogue, this project would not have been possible,” Hostetler said.
Student Government representatives will host an iPad informational launch 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Jan. 25 at the Russell House. Students will have the opportunity to become familiar with iPads and staff will be available to answer questions.
