HBO filmmaker to screen, discuss his films at USC

Award-winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman, whose HBO movie chronicles the rivalry between NBA stars Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, will be at the University of South Carolina the first week of April to screen and discuss his films.

Edelman will share insights about the background and making of his films. He will screen and discuss two films for the public: “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals,” which earned a Peabody Award last year, and “The Curious Case of Curt Flood,” an in-depth documentary of the life and career of Curt Flood, who challenged the baseball reserve clause in 1969, a case that ultimately went to the U.S. Supreme Court.

He also will give a talk on archives and oral histories and attend USC history and film and media studies classes to discuss his work.

The events, which are free and open to the public, include:

Tuesday, April 3 – 7 p.m. Screening of “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals,” with an introduction by Edelman. (College of Nursing) Williams-Brice building, Room 231.

Wednesday, April 4 – 12:15 p.m. Screening and discussion of “The Curious Case of Curt Flood,” featuring Edelman. Darla Moore School of Business, Room 584.

Wednesday, April 4 – 3:30 p.m. “Documentary Filmmaking: A Conversation with Ezra Edelman.” Gambrell Hall, Room 431.

Edelman’s visit to USC is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences’ History Center, Department of History, African American Studies Program, Film and Media Studies Program, Media Arts Program and Preston Residential College.
